T-Mobile likes to give its customers free things. The company pioneered that trend by offering free streaming music back when people still had data limits on their plans. In those days, before the carrier made all its plans unlimited, it took some of the stress off its customers by exempting certain music services from their data totals.
The Un-Carrier, as the company calls itself, later decided to give many of its customers "Netflix on us," basically a free subscription to the streaming platform. That wasn't a one-time gimmick sponsored by Netflix, instead. T-Mobile literally has paid for the streaming service for tens of millions of customers in perpetuity.
DON'T MISS: Walmart Adds Something Amazon and Target Don't Offer
T-Mobile (TMUS) also offers its T-Mobile Tuesday program, where through a dedicated app, subscribers can claim free stuff and special deals. You might get a free taco, a movie ticket, or a free year of Apple's Major League Baseball streaming service,
It's all pretty random, but the deals aren't just about sweetening the offer for T-Mobile customers. That's part of it, of course, as some of the offered perks have had very meaningful cash value, but the company's giveaways are more about building a bond with the brand.
T-Mobile isn't just giving you stuff, it's using its leverage to get deals and freebies for its members. Now, the wireless carrier has another free offer for a different group of customers, and it's a big one that will save subscribers hundreds of dollars.
T-Mobile Gives Internet Customers a Big Free Perk
T-Mobile has only been offering home Internet since 2019. It serves customers the internet over its 5G network. That's not a true alternative to the speeds incumbent internet service providers (ISPs) like Comcast (CMCSA) and Charter Communication (CHTR) offer, but it's good enough for many (and much cheaper at $50 a month),
Basically, T-Mobile offers an alternative to traditional internet. It only sells the service in markets where it can deliver download speeds of at least 25 megabits per second and upload speeds of at least 3 Mbps.
That's not fast by modern standards, but it should let you stream video without major lags and attend a video meeting without breaking up.
Now, T-Mbole is offering new customers who switch to its 5G Internet service a year of Instacart, along with a credit that can be used with the delivery service.
"It’s peak moving season, and whether people are moving homes or just ready to move on from their internet provider, T-Mobile is making it easy to get settled and connected. Starting today for a limited time, anyone who switches to T-Mobile 5G Home Internet or Small Business Internet gets FREE Instacart + for one year and a $100 credit to Instacart (a $200 total value!) to stock up on everyday home and office essentials," the company shared in a press release.
T-Mobile Grows Its Internet Business
The current ISPs are ripe for disruption for the same reason T-Mobile was able to take share from AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ) in the wireless space -- they never really stopped acting like the monopoly. That's why with a slower, but cheaper internet service, T-Mobile has been able to add a total of 3.17 million internet customers.
That number was much higher at the end of the company's first quarter compared to the previous one, accoridng to comments from CEO Mike Sievert during T-Mobile's Q1 earnings call.
"We added 523,000 high-speed internet customers as we have continued to grow our gross adds every quarter since we launched two years ago. I would expect that we added more broadband customers than AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, and Charter combined for the fourth consecutive quarter," he shared.
T-Mobile actually added roughly the same amount of internet customers as its four rivals put together, according to data from Leichtman Research Group.
