More human remains have been discovered along a stretch of coastline in Palos Verdes Estates, California, just a day after a severed leg washed ashore in the same area.
Authorities reported the grim discovery of a partial limb on Thursday, less than 24 hours after a family, out on a Christmas Day walk, stumbled upon a severed leg near the same location, KTLA reported.
Cadaver dogs were deployed to search the area following the initial find, but no additional evidence was located at that time. The remains were found close to where two fishermen, both in their 50s, went missing on Christmas Eve after their boat capsized near Cabrillo Beach.
The fishermen's overturned boat was located shortly after their disappearance, but rough weather conditions hindered search efforts. The Coast Guard suspended the operation on Wednesday, citing a lack of evidence that the men could still be alive.
Police have not confirmed whether the remains belong to the missing boaters. "We're not ruling anything out, but that has not been determined at this point," Palos Verdes Estates Police Captain Aaron Belda said.
Residents have expressed shock over the discoveries, particularly during the holiday season.
"This is terrible," local John Crayton told NBC. "It's Christmas; it's supposed to be a season of joy."
The area has a history of unsettling finds. In November, human bones, including a skull and torso, were found on nearby Rat Beach. The remains were confirmed to be human, but authorities have not released information about their identity or cause of death.
Investigations into the current discoveries are ongoing as officials work to determine if the cases are connected.
