Syrian rebels have reportedly seized control of the infamous Saydnaya Military Prison located north of Damascus. In a statement released on Sunday, the rebels announced their success in liberating prisoners and putting an end to what they described as an era of injustice within the prison.

The Saydnaya Military Prison gained international notoriety when Amnesty International referred to it as 'the human slaughterhouse' in a 2017 report. The organization extensively documented mass hangings that took place within the facility.

A recent report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in July 2023 shed light on the ongoing prevalence of torture, cruel treatment, and enforced disappearances within Syrian detention centers, including Saydnaya. The report highlighted the systematic patterns of abuse and inhumane conditions faced by detainees.

The capture of Saydnaya Military Prison by the Syrian rebels marks a significant development in the conflict against the government of Bashar al-Assad. The prison, known for its history of human rights abuses, has been a symbol of the atrocities committed during the Syrian civil war.

As the situation continues to unfold, the international community closely monitors the aftermath of the rebel takeover and the fate of the prisoners held within Saydnaya. The rebels' claim of ending the era of injustice in the prison raises hopes for improved conditions and accountability for past atrocities.
