Syria's Baath Party announced on Wednesday that it is suspending its work and activities until further notice. The decision was made public through a statement released on the party's media outlet.
The Baath Party, which had been under the leadership of the Assad family for decades, declared that all its property, funds, and weapons are to be handed over to Syrian government bodies. This includes vehicles and weapons previously held by party members, which are to be surrendered to the Ministry of Interior or the nearest police unit.
Furthermore, the party's assets and funds will be placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Justice. Any proceeds generated from these assets are to be deposited in the Central Syrian Bank.
This decision comes in the aftermath of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fleeing the country following an offensive by rebel forces. Bashar al-Assad assumed leadership in 2000 after an uncontested election following the passing of his father, Hafez al-Assad, who had been at the helm of the Baath Party since 1970.
