Syria insurgents take control of key city of Hama in fresh blow to Assad

Syrian insurgents have forced president Bashar al-Assad's army to retreat from the key city of Hama – a major victory after a lightning advance across the north Syria.

The Syrian army said it was redeploying outside the city "to preserve civilians lives and prevent urban combat" after what it called intense clashes.
