Syria backs Russian recognition of east Ukraine breakaway regions

Moscow has been a key ally of President Bashar al-Assad's government throughout the Syrian conflict that erupted in 2011 with the repression of anti-government protests [File: Reuters]

In comments carried by the state-run Syrian News Agency, Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad was quoted as saying that the government of President Bashar al-Assad “will cooperate” with the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People’s Republic (LNR).
