Sydney down Jets to become ALW premiers

Sydney FC have sealed a record third-straight A-League Women premiership by claiming a 4-0 win over the Newcastle Jets in the final round of the regular season.

Following Western United's win earlier on Saturday, Sydney needed to beat the Jets to seal their third-straight premiers' plate and they did so courtesy of doubles from Mackenize Hawkesby and Cortnee Vine.

But Ante Juric's side didn't have things all their own way at Allianz Stadium with Jets goalkeeper Georgie Worth in inspired form for the Novocastrians.

The elements also made things difficult for the Sky Blues with Saturday's early downpour making the ball frustratingly stick to the surface when they attempted to break.

It was particularly frustrating for Matildas winger Vine on the right, whose sharp runs with the ball were halted by puddles on the pitch.

The breakthrough came down the left in the 15th minute when Princess Ibini turned a ball back from the byline for Hawkesby to calmly chip Worth.

Sydney huffed and puffed but the desperate Jets held firm.

Ibini had a shot cleared off the line, another hit the crossbar and American forward Madison Haley missed a close-range sitter.

With 15 minutes left the Jets brought the retiring pair of forward Tara Andrews and goalkeeper Claire Coelho on for a farewell cameo.

But Coelho had an afternoon to forget as she replaced Worth.

Hawkesby fired off a long-range effort that the stand-in keeper fumbled into the back of her net.

Vine then scored two goals after the 90th minute to put the gloss on the victory.
