Switch 2 Model Leak: Nintendo Reportedly Working on Updating Current-Gen Console's Screen

Nintendo has recently celebrated the Switch 2's first year on the market, but a new leak is now claiming that the handheld console would get a new and updated model in the future.

A newly surfaced component listing suggests Nintendo may be working on an updated version of the "Nintendo Switch 2," with the changes centered specifically around the console's screen (via Nintendo Patents Watch on Bluesky).

The leak centers around a Switch 2 LCD panel believed to be made by Sharp, which appeared on a Chinese resale site in late June. Compared with the launch model panel from Innolux, the exposed circuit, connector, and cables shown in the listing photos are noticeably different, suggesting an updated design rather than a minor revision.

The screen module carries the designation LS079T1SX10P, a label that does not correspond to any previously known part. Based on Sharp's typical naming conventions, this is believed to indicate a 7.9-inch LTPS panel with 1080p resolution, matching the same general specs as the current display.

Sharp's connection to this leak lines up with some recent corporate signals as well. According to GameRant, the company's investor materials from May 2026 showed that operating losses within its Display Device division had narrowed, with plans outlined to expand sales for mobile and industrial applications at its Hakusan plant.

Those documents did not mention Nintendo directly, though the timing fits with a broader push to ramp up display production.

Sharp had actually been rumored as a potential Switch 2 panel supplier long before the console launched, though Innolux ultimately ended up supplying the screen at release.

It is also worth noting that the original Switch 2 display may have already used Sharp-made LTPS glass before final assembly by Innolux, meaning this new part could reflect a change in sourcing or internal layout rather than a clear generational upgrade.

Why Is Nintendo Updating the Switch 2?

Nintendo has a well-established pattern of releasing hardware revisions throughout a console's lifespan, having done so multiple times during the original "Switch" era.

It started with the V2 that debuted the more efficient base model, the handheld-only "Switch Lite," and the OLED model featuring a more premium display.

That history is part of why some fans expect a similar refresh to eventually arrive for the "Switch 2," which was only released in June 2025 and has so far performed strongly, becoming one of Nintendo's fastest-selling consoles to date.

So far, the "Switch 2" has not received any major consumer-facing hardware variant beyond minor adjustments. Some kind of screen-related update does appear likely since manufacturers rarely adjust their production lines without a clear practical reason behind the change.

Nintendo confirmed that starting September 1, 2026, the Switch 2's price in the US will rise from $449.99 to $499.99, citing ongoing shifts in market conditions expected to continue over the medium to long term.

With rising component costs already reshaping the console's pricing, a quiet hardware revision involving the screen would be a welcome change, as long as it does not affect pricing.
