Sweets, meat and other items you need to bin right now as Centra, Dunnes, Lidl and more issue recalls in recent weeks

There have been several food recall orders published by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland over recent weeks affecting customers across many big-name stores.

From counterfeit sweets to salmonella and listeria warnings, Irish shoppers need to ensure they don’t have any of these products in the fridge or cupboard at home.

All retailers stocking the following products will have point of sale notices posted in the store and will provide shoppers with refunds if returning any of the implicated batches.

Here are all of the current recall notices in effect in recent weeks:

Wonka Bars

The FSAI warned consumers not to buy or eat Wonka branded chocolate bars, due to counterfeit versions bearing the same branding being sold on the market here.

The counterfeit chocolate bars may be unsafe to eat, as there is a possibility that they may not have been produced in line with food safety, hygiene and/or food traceability legal requirements to protect public health.

Some examples of the issues identified to date with these counterfeit Wonka branded chocolate bars include:

  • failure to provide an accurate ingredients list e.g., undeclared ingredients and allergens on the label
  • false business name and address on the label
  • the rewrapping of various shop bought or homemade chocolate bars in Wonka wrappers
  • unregistered food businesses selling products online

Kinder

Batches of Kinder Surprise chocolate eggs were recalled over the weekend due to the presence of Salmonella.

Included in the recall are Kinder Surprise 20g and Kinder Surprise 20g x3 with best before dates between July 11, 2022, and October 7, 2022.

Retailers were told to remove the implicated products from sale and to display a point-of-sale recall notice in stores where the affected products were sold.

Meanwhile, all wholesalers and distributors are asked to contact any affected customers, recall the affected products and provide a point-of-sale recall notice to their retail customers.

A spokesperson from the FSAI said: “The FSAI, together with the Health Protection Surveillance Centre of the HSE, is investigating this ongoing food poisoning outbreak which is affecting Ireland, the UK and a number of other European countries.

“To date, there have been ten cases in Ireland with the same strain of Salmonella responsible for the UK outbreak.

“A number of these Irish cases have involved young children, all of whom have fully recovered. The FSAI is warning consumers who may have the recalled products at home not to eat them.”

Dunnes smoked salmon pate

Dunnes Stores is recalling batches of Baxter & Greene Smoked Salmon Pate due to the possible presence of plastic pieces.

The implicated batch - with the use-by date: 17.03.2022 - was sold in some stores in Limerick and Galway areas.

Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the affected batch.

Lidl Paella

Lidl stores in Ireland issued an urgent recall of a batch of Culinea Paella due to a labelling issue.

The ingredients are not labelled in English and the implicated batch contains crustaceans, fish, milk and molluscs.

This may make the batch unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of any of these allergens.

Additionally, the cooking instructions are not labelled in English.

An alert about the recall was issued by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland on Monday.

The Culinea Paella has a pack size of 750g, a batch code of L1354-2, and a best before date of June 20, 2023.

Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in Lidl stores supplied with the implicated batch.

Centra BBQ salmon

Recall of a Batch of Centra Hot Smoked BBQ Salmon That Incorrectly Contains Raw Salmon Darnes Which Require Cooking (FSAI)

Centra has issued an urgent recall for a batch of a popular fish product that was incorrectly labelled.

The alert was issued for one batch of Centra Hot Smoked BBQ Salmon on Thursday.

Food safety chiefs said the pack contained raw salmon darnes, despite the label stating that it was ‘ready to eat’.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland said: “Centra is recalling the above batch of Hot Smoked BBQ Salmon as it was mislabelled and incorrectly contains raw salmon darnes.

“The affected batch is not labelled with cooking instructions.

“Point-of-sale recall notices will be displayed in stores supplied with the implicated batch.”

The affected batches are 200g, have the approval number IE-DN0012-EC and a use-by date of 01/04/2022.
