Sweet story behind song Foo Fighters' Taylor Hawkins penned for daughter

Taylor Hawkins once penned a song specially for his daughter.

The Foo Fighters drummer, who has tragically died at the age of 50, previously opened up about how 13-year-old Annabelle inspired his song Middle Child.

The track features on 2019 album Get The Money, which the rocker released with his side project Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, but he was originally writing something for his son Oliver Shane, 14.

But Taylor, who also shared eight-year-old daughter Everleigh with wife Alison, said his son wasn't exactly impressed.

He once told Joe Daly : "I had this song for my son. It’s a sweet song. I’ve had the music for that for five or six years but I had a s**t lyric and I didn’t have a bridge and it didn’t end up on KOTA [another of his albums]. I think I had it as far back as the Birds of Satan record, which was 2013 or something.

"It got all the way to possibly being on the record, so I played it for my son and he goes, 'If you put that on your record, I’m gonna punch you in the face!' He was like, 'If you’re gonna write a song about me, it’s gotta sound like Metallica! I don’t want some wimpy ass, p***y song about me, dad!'"

His daughter then came to him to say he should write a song about her instead.

Taylor went on: "At that time, my daughter was like, 'You have to have a song for me!' I was like, 'Well, I don’t know. You’re the middle child and you’re acting like a middle child right now, seeking attention and approval'.

"'Which I understand because Shane’s always in trouble and the baby’s [daughter Everleigh] cute as f**k, so you’re in the middle. But you’re like my twin, too.' She really is. So I thought, 'Why don’t I just call the song Middle Child?'"

The song includes the lyrics: "Clean your mess up almost every night / Your guilty conscience gets a hold of you / First one there, you never make me wait / Another perfect daddy-daughter date

"You were cross when you got home yesterday / Came to me and I knew just what to say / My little twin, I am here with you / Stay close and we will make it through

"How I love you, middle child / I see angels when you smile / And when I look into your eyes / I could stay forever with you / While the day turns into night / As we drift slowly to the sky".

Taylor's sudden death was announced today in a statement on the Foo Fighters' official Twitter page.

It read: "The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins.

"His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever.

"Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time."

He was found dead in his hotel room, according to local reports, ahead of the band's performance at a music festival in Bogota, Colombia, which they have since cancelled.
