Sweden turned 2.5 million tonnes of imported waste into heat and electricity

Sweden processed 2.5 million tonnes of sorted waste imported from other European countries in 2024. The country’s waste-to-energy plants have more capacity than the amount of combustible waste generated within Sweden, which allows them to accept waste from abroad. Avfall Sverige’s Swedish Waste Management 2024 report states that 1.2 million tonnes of the imported waste were municipal waste. The imported material provided fuel for energy recovery while helping other European countries deal with their waste. Swedish energy recovery plants handled 6.6 million tonnes of waste during the year and generated about 20 terawatt-hours of energy. This included 17.6 TWh used for heating and 2.4 TWh for electricity.
