Swansea's famous Starvin' Jacks cafe and caterers to close after 25 years

The couple behind one of Swansea's most well-known cafe and catering businesses have decided to hang up their aprons after a quarter of a century.

Starvin' Jacks was a popular destination in the city centre for 20 years where it was known as much for the friendliness of the staff as for its jacket potatoes, baguettes, and coffee. In 2018 the Portland Street cafe closed its doors and the business moved to a unit on the Enterprise Zone where it expanded the catering side of the operation.

But now owners Kathryn and Nigel Evans have decided to call it a day and retire this summer. The couple said they have "loved and flourished in" the long hours and hands-on nature of cafe life but have decided to retire and spend more time with their family. Starvin' Jacks will close its doors for the final time on Augsust 1. Get the latest Swansea news sent straight to your email inbox by signing up to our newsletter.

In a Facebook post the couple thanked their staff and customers. They wrote: "After twenty-five years of smiles, laughter, hard work and memories, we’re taking the exciting jump into retirement. On 1st August 2023 we’ll close the doors of Starvin’ Jacks for the final time.

"We have loved and flourished in the long hours and hands-on nature of our business. However, we also wanted to make sure we left such a happy and successful business on a high, and after much deliberation, we feel it is the right time to call it a day. We’ve taken the personal decision to spend more time with our family and begin the next chapter in our lives.

"Though we’ll still be open for another few months, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all our employees - past and present - who have made the Starvin’ Jacks family such a wonderful, happy and successful adventure for us over the last twenty five years. And we owe a huge thank you to our lovely customers as well. You have brought us friendship, humour, loyalty and great memories that we will cherish forever. Love and Best Wishes."
