Swansea City star Liam Walsh suffers devastating injury blow as transfer plans now in limbo

Swansea City midfielder Liam Walsh is set for a significant spell on the sidelines after rupturing his Achilles.

The 24-year-old was withdrawn in the opening half of his side's pre-season win over Haverfordwest County on Friday. Walsh did not feature in Tuesday's behind-closed-doors fixture against Colchester United.

And it has been confirmed that he will undergo surgery next week in what serves as yet another blow in the Everton academy product's injury-hampered career.

“It is so unfortunate because Walshy was in a brilliant place and had come back in really good shape,” Swansea's assistant boss Matt Gill told the club website. “He was training and playing well. It is a really tough one for us to take, as it obviously is for Walshy.

“He is going to have some surgery on his Achilles. We will make sure he gets looked after properly and he gets the care and attention he deserves and needs.”

Walsh suffered a hamstring injury on the eve of the 2021/22 campaign and struggled to force his way into Russell Martin's first team plans last season. He joined Hull City on loan in January but was restricted to just three appearances with the Tigers before returning to south Wales.

The Swans were willing to offload Walsh this summer as part of their plans to bring Joe Allen back to the Swansea.com Stadium, although he will now be out of action for a significant period.

Flynn Downes did not feature against Colchester United amid transfer interest from Crystal Palace. Jay Fulton remains at the club and could now stay in south Wales given the expected departure of Downes combined with the injury sustained by Walsh.
