Swansea City's 'shining light' and their 'invaluable' star as key concern answered in QPR win

He's the man who has been there, done it all and worn every T-shirt on offer since Swansea City dropped into the Championship little more than four years ago.

Matt Grimes' big chance with the Swans came under Graham Potter during the 2018/19 campaign and he has been an integral figure at the club ever since.

It arguably makes Grimes - who has played every single minute of his side's last 54 Championship matches - the most qualified to pore over all of the key topics relating to Swansea at present, and the captain's delight with his side's triumph against Queens Park Rangers - their first on home soil this season - was clear for all to see when he addressed the media in the aftermath of the contest.

"The win, a first win at home this season, was a long time coming and especially after a couple of disappointing times when we've given away the lead late on in games, especially Millwall up here... Stoke as well," explained the 27-year-old.

"It's been so difficult, a couple of results this season where we've felt like we've played well, we've dominated the game and not got what we deserved.

"I thought our performance was not as good as we've been today but the hunger and desire was there to keep the ball out of the back of our net, especially in the last 10-15 minutes and the Jack Army as well giving us that extra yard towards the end of the game."

It was perhaps telling that Joel Piroe struck the decisive goal against QPR fewer than 48 hours after the summer transfer window closed. After the match, head coach Russell Martin revealed the Dutchman was only able to focus on his penalty miss against the Hoops, such is his desire to bulge the net.

"I was shocked he missed the penalty. He still is and such are his standards that he is really annoyed in the dressing room," said Martin in his post-match press conference.

Indeed, Piroe's display against Michael Beale's side was one that served as yet another reminder of how clinical the Dutchman - who has now scored in each of his last three matches - is in front of goal.

"He's a top lad and a top pro. Obviously there's been a lot of noise around him this summer but he's kept his head down and he's got on with his work," Grimes said on his team-mate. "He's always top of the charts when it comes to running, sprint distance, high intensity and he's our main goal-scorer. So he's invaluable to the team and we're pleased to have him.

"I don't think it (the transfer speculation) affected him but it's always difficult, I speak from personal experience when you're linked here, there and everywhere and your future's up in the air.

"He'll be glad to be settled with the window shut and he'll just be focusing on his performances. Like you've seen today, he's a top-class player - obviously he missed the penalty but he bounced straight back with the goal. We're very lucky to have him."

In addition to keeping hold of last season's top scorer Piroe, the Jack Army have been able to celebrate the recent introduction of Ollie Cooper into first team proceedings. The academy product started the matches against Stoke City and QPR and excelled during his time on the pitch in both fixtures.

Such has been his form, more established stars such as Olivier Ntcham now face a real battle to earn a place in the starting line-up. And Grimes admits Cooper has revitalised the Swans after a frustrating start to the campaign.

"Absolutely incredible, I can't say enough good words about him," the captain said when asked about the efforts of Cooper. "He's come in and he's given us energy, he's given us pace, athleticism and such good quality on the ball.

"He's been one of our shining lights already this season... hopefully he can keep that up, keep growing and improving. We've got a young, hungry group that's keen to prove themselves, grow and develop as a squad and individuals. It's been positive."

Having won just one of their opening eight matches in all competitions this season, the end of the transfer window, combined with the hard-fought victory against QPR, has helped lift the mood at the Swansea.com Stadium in recent days.

The frustrations of conceding late goals against Millwall, Stoke City and Oxford United were evidently on the minds of the Swansea faithful on Saturday, although their response to four minutes of added time being announced at the end of the clash with QPR was to raise the noise levels and chant relentlessly until referee Oliver Langford drew proceedings to a close.

Their faith was rewarded as the Swans kept only their second clean sheet of the campaign while Martin's men are - such is the hectic nature of the Championship - now only four points adrift of the top six. And skipper Grimes believes Swansea silenced their doubters in holding on against QPR.

"It's just mentality, when you concede late goals and things aren't quite going for you," admitted Grimes. "I felt we could have scored three or four against Stoke in the week and things aren't quite going for you in the forward areas, it's easy to drop your head.

"But we were so focused and determined today to keep the intensity, to keep the energy for the full 90 minutes, see out the game and keep peppering their goal with more chances if we could.

"That's what you've seen today, we've answered a few questions on our mentality and it would have been easy to crumble and to concede again. We stood up to it and answered a few doubters."
