Swansea City news as star spells out message ahead of West Brom clash and young gun given new Wales role

Your Swansea City headlines for Tuesday, September 27.

Cabango eyes form continuation

Ben Cabango believes Swansea's strong run before the international break will benefit them ahead of their return to action against West Brom on Saturday.

The Swans won two of their three matches prior to the break, keeping clean sheets against Hull City and Queens Park Rangers while they also produced impressive displays against Sheffield United and Stoke City.

And Cabango - who featured for Wales against Poland on Sunday night - believes the 3-0 triumph over Hull was just what Russell Martin's men deserved following the collective effort of the squad.

“I think the last three or four performances have been good, but obviously it was really good to come into the international break on the back of a win,” Cabango told the club website.

“We bounced back from some of the disappointments we have had recently, we have kept two clean sheets in our last three games and we have started picking up points.

“We have created a lot of chances, and been solid at the back, but then we have not managed to put it all together.

“Against Hull it felt like we did that. As a defender you always want that clean sheet to go with a win and I feel we have been improving as the season has gone on.

“That’s testament to all the lads, it’s not just the defenders, the guys in front of us have to put in the hard work too. We will be ready to go again and try and pick up where we left off.”

Baggies legend expects West Brom improvement

Jonas Olsson fully expects his former club West Brom to turnaround their fortunes under Steve Bruce.

The Baggies have won just one of their opening 10 league matches this season and are only outside of the Championship's relegation zone on goal difference.

Boss Bruce has been fiercely criticised by the West Brom faithful of late, with some expecting him to have been axed during the international break. However, he is set to be in the managerial hot seat when the Baggies welcome Swansea to The Hawthorns Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

And former Sweden star Olsson - who played more than 250 times for the Midlands outfit - believes his former side's performances have warranted more points so far this term.

“I’ve watched quite a few games as well and thought we’ve played some really good football this year," the 39-year-old told the Express & Star.

“We’ve been unlucky with results sometimes, but I think it’s a major step forward in terms of performance.

“I think there is a really talented squad as well and a good manager and coaching staff also. Hopefully the results will come.”

West Brom v Swansea City gets underway at 3pm on Saturday.

Loanee handed vice-captaincy role

Fin Stevens has been named as vice-captain for Wales' Under-21s.

The versatile right-back is currently at Swansea on loan from Brentford for the duration of the 2022/23 but is away on international duty with Wales' age grade set-up.

He is expected to be involved as former Swans academy coach and new boss Matty Jones takes charge of the side for the first time in a friendly against Austria in Vienna tonight.

And it has been confirmed that 19-year-old Stevens - who has made three appearances for the Swans - is the side's new vice-captain, with Brighton's Ed Turns taking the captain's armband.

Swansea goalkeeper Evan Watts and striker Josh Thomas are both in the Wales Under-21 squad for the clash with Austria tonight. Kick-off is at 7:30pm.

Young guns beaten by Robins

Swansea City's Under-21s were beaten 2-1 by Bristol City in their latest Professional Development League contest.

A brace from Sam Bell put the hosts in command at the Robins High Performance Centre on Tuesday afternoon. However, Tarrelle Whittaker pulled a goal back for the visitors 20 minutes from time to set up a tense finish.

But Jon Grey and Anthony Wright's troops were unable to find a late equaliser as they suffered a narrow defeat in the Severnside derby fixture. First team players Brandon Cooper and Nathanael Ogbeta are among those who featured for Swansea's young guns.
