Swansea City news as Ollie Cooper reveals secret to early season success and Ladies record 16-0 win

Here's your round-up of all the latest Swansea City headlines for Monday, October 10.

Cooper thankful for Newport education

Swansea City youngster Ollie Cooper says last season's loan at Newport County was instrumental in helping him hit the ground running in the Championship.

The 22-year-old netted his first senior goal in the win over Sunderland at the weekend, and has been one of the standout performers under Russell Martin recently.

And he believes his spell further east down the M4 has been crucial in his development.

"I had a very good season at Newport last season," he said. "It was instrumental in my development and getting me ready to hit the ground running when I came back this season.

"The gaffer was great in terms of coming to watch my games last season. He truly believes in me and to know that he truly believes in me is a great feeling. It gives me the confidence when I go out on the pitch.

"I did and it wasn’t just the games, it was the fact they were Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday.

"It was just a step up from U23s level and it was what I needed - going out and playing against men.

"These were games where it wasn’t about just developing. It was all about winning or losing in League Two.

"To get that experience is massive for anyone’s development."

Fulton hails Swans' resilience

Jay Fulton has hailed Swansea City's blend of substance and style, following their recent run of four consecutive victories.

Fulton put in a hugely impressive performance against Sunderland on Saturday, a result that's come on the back of a hectic time on the road.

“It was tough I think, because of the week we’ve had with two away games with a lot of travelling,” he said .

“They were two tough games so to come back here and win again, I thought it was a battling performance to get three points. To get nine points in a week is massive.

“First half we had more of the ball, and in the second half we had to defend a little bit more but a lot of that had to do with the travelling and how much the two games took out of us at the start of the week.

“I think since the start of the season, we’ve had good performances. We felt like we let a lot of points slip at the start of the season so it’s good to finally get rewards for that.

“I think you’ve got to pride yourself on attacking and defending and I think we’ve shown that in the past few games.”

Ladies record double-digit win

Swansea City booked their place in the third round of the FAW Women's Cup by demolishing Coedffranc Women. 16-0.

Eight different players got onto the scoresheet, with Nia Rees netting five and Katy Hosford scoring four.

Emily Freeman bagged a brace, while Jess Williams, Ellie Lake, Nieve Jenkins, Chloe Tiley and Gwen Horgan also found the net.

“It’s testament to the girls and to the staff that they kept their standards high,” said assistant boss Harry Thomas.

“We’re really happy with today, obviously the girls played really well, they stuck to what we asked of them in training, so we are really chuffed.

“It was fantastic for individuals to get a number of goals and assists, but for me the team played superbly and that’s something that we are keen to keep going.

“We want to take this performance into next week, keep our standards high as they always are and always will be”.

Owners make donation to Jac Lewis Foundation

Swansea City shareholders Steve Kaplan, Jason Levien and Jake Silverstein have donated £10,000 to the Jac Lewis Foundation.

The Jac Lewis Foundation was set up in 2019 following the death of 27-year-old Jac Lewis, a popular and much-loved player for Ammanford AFC and Swansea fan.

It aims to offer support to anyone struggling with their mental health, with the intention of preventing people from attempting to take their own life.

“The Jac Lewis Foundation has been working closely with the club for some time now and the work they do with the local community is making a huge difference to people’s lives,” said Silverstein.

“As a club we always want to support the community wherever possible, and we will continue to strive to make a difference and ensure people have the support they need in the community

“We are conscious that we have tragically lost several supporters in recent months due to mental health challenges and we want to make a difference to anyone who might be struggling. We are grateful for the opportunity to play a part in providing tools and resources to support mental health and psychological wellbeing in the community.”

Liz Thomas-Evans, director of services at the Jac Lewis Foundation, added: “Being able to work together with Swansea City to provide the Mental Health One Stop Hub for the local community has removed barriers to accessing quick mental health and practical support and has helped to save lives.

“As we are currently facing a cost-of-living crisis, access to the hub is even more important. The Jac Lewis Foundation is extremely grateful for the ongoing support from Swansea City which has been critical in providing this to the local community.”
