Swansea boss explains plan for Man City loanee Finley Burns after 'exciting' debut

Finley Burns says he knows he can improve after making his debut for Swansea, despite earning praise from his new manager for his performance.

Burns joined Swansea on loan from Manchester City in January for his first spell away from the Etihad after playing a regular role for the under-23s this season and making his senior debut in the Carabao Cup.

This weekend, he made his Championship debut for the Swans in their 3-1 comeback win over Bristol City, and Burns couldn't hide his delight after the game at the result.

“It was brilliant, the fans really helped me with how they got behind us,” he said.

“It was a big day for myself, making my debut in front of anyone and it was a pleasure. It’s a great feeling, we went a goal down but once we got that equaliser you could feel the atmosphere raise and we were able to push on from that and get the win."

Burns then outlined his ambition to get more games under his belt, and ensure he is a regular starter for the Swans in their bid to improve on their current 16th place.

“I have felt welcomed here and it was a brilliant feeling to make my debut," he explained.

"The aim is to try and earn a regular place in the first team, there were a few mistakes in my game that I know I need to learn from and correct for the future to get better. I just want to get as many games under my belt and get the team moving in the right direction.”

Swans boss Russell Martin was full of praise for Burns, and explained what the club want to get out of his loan until the end of the season.

“I thought he was great. I thought he showed what is going to come," he predicted.

“I was really pleased with Fin. He has come in and really impressed everyone and I think for a debut in this league, his mentality, his quality, his willingness to defend and compete was pleasing.

“We have got a really exciting prospect on our hands and now it is up to us to develop him and make sure he understands every detail.

“We are really, really happy with him and hopefully today will give him a springboard to really kick on from.”

Martin also explained how Burns' 75th-minute substitution was purely to manage the youngster's adaptation to his new surroundings, explaining that the City defender was fatigued on his league debut.

“The change wasn’t anything to do with his performance,” Martin confirmed. "It was about him fatiguing in his first Championship game with the adrenaline and the energy.”
