Suzy Lamplugh suspect John Cannan was looking for Bristol women to date following her disappearance

Channel 5's new documentary investigating the 1986 disappearance of estate agent Suzy Lamplugh has broadcast the moment prime suspect John Cannan advertised himself to date Bristol women.

Detectives named Cannan as the prime suspect of Lamplugh’s disappearance in 2002. However, the Crown Prosecution Service said there was not enough evidence to prosecute.

Soon after Suzy went missing, John Cannan relocated from West London to Bristol, using the false name John Peterson, he joined a dating agency and made a video in which he pretended to be a successful business man.

In footage shown in the 90-minute documentary, detectives told how the family of Suzy, who went missing following a house viewing in Fulham, revealed she was, or had been in a relationship with a man from Bristol. She is said to have described him as 'scary' and was very worried about him.

A visual description given by Suzy's family of the man in question, was found to match up to a dating video with Suitor Dating Agency of suspect John Cannan advertising himself to potential matches.

Footage shown in the documentary of the dating video shows Cannan saying: "Financially and career wise I've achieved what I've wanted to achieve, I'm just now looking for what the next thing to achieve."

When asked what he looks for in a person, Cannan said: "Well I think apart from the physical side, again I think somebody who's pleasant, who's natural."

A clip shown of Suitor Dating Agency worker Caroline Francis who met Cannon said: "He was actually very nice. I thought he was attractive, well presented, he had a smart suit on and he came across as a very confident and probably fairly aggressive person."

Now 68, John Cannan is currently being held in Full Sutton prison in East Yorkshire, for the murder of another woman, newlywed Shirley Banks, in 1987.

In 1994 - eight years after her disappearance, Miss Lamplugh was officially declared dead, presumed murdered. In 2002, Scotland Yard named convicted rapist and killer John Cannan as a key suspect in her disappearance.

Cannan, 64, serving three life sentences for murder and a series of sex attacks, has denied any involvement.

The search of the field just off the A44 just outside Drakes Broughton is not the first time police have carried out a dig in the area.

In August 2010, police began searching a field off the B4084 between Pershore and Drakes Broughton, about three miles from the former Norton Barracks in Worcestershire.

The 2010 search proved unsuccessful and Lamplugh's remains have still not been found. Previous searches in the area were carried out in December 2000 and February 2001.

In December 2000, police had also searched a nearby brickworks, which had been mentioned in several of the original witness statements.
