Suunto launches Race S – a compact AMOLED sports watch at a competitive price

Suunto has unveiled a new compact version of its Race sports watch, designed for runners with smaller wrists and those who prefer a more discreet look. The original Suunto Race was released in October last year, and the new Suunto Race S puts all the same features in a smaller package.

That includes a smart-looking stainless steel case (45mm compared to 49mm for the original watch), AMOLED display, physical buttons, and a digital crown for easy operation when touchscreen controls aren't practical.

Free offline maps let you follow pre-planned courses without data connectivity. You'll also get personalized feedback on your training load, progress and recovery, which is calculated using your heart rate variability (HRV).

Our colleagues at TechRadar gave the original Suunto Race a score of three and a half stars out of five, concluding that "The screen is sharp, the build quality suitably solid, and the price very tempting."

Their main criticisms were that the fitness insights aren't as detailed as those from the best Garmin watches, and heart rate tracking isn't as accurate as they would like, but hopefully these issues will be fixed with future software updates.

The Suunto Race S is available to buy now direct from Suunto in a range of colors for $349/£325.
