Surveillance footage of two alleged shoplifters captured one of them finding out that certain shoplifting offenses were newly considered to be felonies in the state of California.
In the footage, the two women sit at the back of a patrol car in handcuffs after being apprehended for shoplifting. One woman demonstrates audible surprise as the suspect next to her reveals the state's legislative developments.
"It's a felony?" says the woman.
"B*tch new laws!" the suspect next to her replies. "Stealing is a felony and this Orange County b*tch. They don't play."
On Sunday, the Seal Beach Police Department apprehended three women after they walked into a local Ulta Beauty store and attempted to steal $648 worth of products.
The same three women then went into a Kohl's store and once again attempted to shoplift, taking $1,000 worth of merchandise with them out of the store.
"A friendly reminder that Proposition 36, which increases punishments for some retail theft and drug possession offenses, went into effect Wednesday morning in California," the Seal Beach PD wrote on Instagram alongside the footage of the women getting arrested.
"Don't steal in Seal!"
During the 2024 elections, California voters voted in favor of Proposition 36, a measure that would add an estimated 130,000 additional people to California jails by criminalizing certain drug and theft offenses.
