Susanna Reid showed her more personal side during her latest appearance on Good Morning Britain as she struggled to talk about one of the latest breaking news stories. The presenter was back at the helm of the ITV news programme on Tuesday (February 7) alongside Ben Shephard.
And throughout the show, the pair were bringing live updates from Turkey where the death toll from a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and multiple aftershocks rose to more than 5,000 on Tuesday as more bodies were pulled from the rubble of collapsed buildings.
At the time of writing, Turkey’s vice president, Fuat Oktay, said the total number of deaths in the country had risen to 3,419, with another 20,534 people injured. That brought the number of people killed to 5,102, with another 1,602 people confirmed dead on the Syrian side of the border.
The earthquake struck early on Monday, bringing down thousands of buildings. Rescuers were racing frantically to find more survivors but their efforts were being impeded by temperatures below freezing and some 200 aftershocks, which made the search through unstable structures perilous.
During the latest episode of Good Morning Britain, the show aired live video footage of the search and rescue operation which is now underway, with an international aid effort being ramped up. Watching the footage, an emotional Susanna said: "I can hardly bear to talk about it really, because when you see children taken out of the rubble, but you know how many children are trapped. It's a desperate situation.
"You almost want everyone to put politics and international tensions completely aside and – it sounds naïve and hopelessly optimistic – but just say, whatever you’ve got, whoever you are, get your equipment in there and get as many of these people out as possible."
Susanna and Ben were also joined by Kevin Maguire and Andrew Pierce in the studio. Kevin said in response to Susanna: "The rescuers, parents, neighbours – they will be hearing the screams and cries of people trapped under and that’s just unimaginable horror. They’re having to remove a lot of debris by hand because they can’t use heavy equipment. People will be injured. They won't have water. They won't have food."
Susanna replied: "Oh my goodness. Desperate, desperate scenes. The things that people must be having to deal with out there. You can only imagine. Good luck to everyone. Our hopes are with them."
