Surprise Royal Ascot winner supplemented for the July Cup at cost of £36k

Shock Royal Ascot winner Khaadem has been supplemented for the July Cup.

The sprinter won the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Ascot at odds of 80-1, the biggest priced winner in the history of the £1 million race.

Now trainer Charlie Hills has paid £36,000 to add his name to the field for the £600,000 Group 1 race which will be run at Newmarket on Saturday.

William Hill ambassador Hills said: “I spoke with Michael Prosser earlier and he says there looks to be a band of rain coming through on Monday evening but bar that and a couple of light showers, the weather looks pretty good so hopefully it stays on the quicker side and we can take our chance.

“I can’t imagine it being soft and, unless the rain really got into the ground, he’ll run. He’ll be fine on good ground, but he does like it quick so let’s hope the showers stay away.

“ I’ve always maintained he’s a Group class sprinter and his career shows that. He’s won some really good races like the Stewards’ Cup, King George and Palace House and obviously last time in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee at Ascot.

“He’s a very good horse and we’re looking forward to Saturday. He looked fantastic before the race at Ascot and he’d been in really good form at home, so it wasn’t a shock to see him run a big race, though I was a little surprised he won it. It was certainly a nice surprise and it’s a great credit to the horse.

“I’ve obviously been very lucky to have had some top-class sprinters and had some great success with them.

“I can’t say I do anything differently with them as you train what’s put in front of you. Maybe the gallops we have suit themselves towards sprinters, but in all honesty, I just really enjoy training these good horses.
