Surgeons operating on a 21-year-old woman knew her stomach was packed with foreign material. They removed 3,000 grams, about 6.6 pounds, of plastic bags and bottle fragments, plastic caps, candy wrappers, adhesive tape, hair, plant fibers, and metal staples.
Then they found something the scans had not shown. A second, separate mass weighing 500 grams, about 1.1 pounds, was blocking the upper part of her jejunum, the middle section of the small intestine.
