Suresh Raina announces retirement from all forms of Cricket

Suresh Raina (Twitter/@ImRaina)

Announcing on Twitter, he wrote, “It has been an absolute honour to represent my country & state UP. I would like to announce my retirement from all formats of Cricket. I would like to thank BCCI, UPCA Cricket, Chennai IPL, Shukla Rajiv sir & all my fans for their support and unwavering faith in my abilities."

Earlier in 2020, Raina had announced his retirement from international cricket. His announcement had came in less than an hour after MS Dhoni had announced retirement his on 15 August. He continued playing the IPL in 2021 but was released by Chennai Super Kings ahead of the 2022 season.

Since an active India or domestic player can't take part in overseas leagues, Raina needed to take this step for him to explore T20 leagues around the world.

He could also be seen in Cricket South Africa's new T20 league, to be held next year, with all six teams owned by IPL franchises, including CSK.

Raina played his last competitive game in October 2021 when he turned up for CSK against Rajasthan Royals in Abu Dhabi.

Raina was part of the World Cup winning squad in 2011. In an international career spanning 13 years, Raina represented India in 18 Tests, 226 ODIs and 78 T20Is.

He gathered 5615 runs from 226 ODIs and 1605 from 78 T20Is for India. Raina, who scored a century on debut in Tests, is also the first Indian to scored hundreds in all three formats of cricket and his centuries were scored outside India.

While playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) Suresh Raina has 5528 runs to his name in 205 IPL matches with 39 half-centuries and one century at a strike rate of 136.76.
