NEW DELHI: In what could cause some anxiety to Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu, the Supreme Court will on Thursday hear petitions seeking review of its 2018 verdict letting off the cricketer-turned-politician with a fine of Rs 1,000 by modifying a high court order convicting him for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and awarding three years’ jail term.
Sidhu, along with co-accused Rupinder Singh Sandhu, was tried for charges under Section 302 IPC and Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) read with Section 34 (common intention) of IPC, but was acquitted by a Patiala court on September 22, 1999 for allegedly punching one Gurnam Singh, who died in hospital.
