The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed that cameras installed on highways and roads be used to identify uninsured vehicles and issue them automatic challans. A bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and Prashant Kumar Mishra passed the direction after finding that a large number of vehicles ply on Indian roads without valid insurance, a TOI report stated.
The order aims to use camera infrastructure already installed on highways to enforce compulsory vehicle insurance under Section 146 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Government data shows that 56% of vehicles on Indian roads remain uninsured. The court said this leaves accident victims without a quick way to get compensation.
