Prior to this, an inverted U.S. flag, a distress symbol, was observed at his home in Virginia. Both flags were carried by rioters during the events of January 6, 2021.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Dick Durbin, a Democrat, has called on Alito to recuse himself from cases related to the 2020 election in light of these flag displays. The flags, including the Appeal to Heaven flag associated with Christian nationalism, have raised concerns about Alito's political loyalties.
