Supreme Court allows Trump to keep building ‘likely unlawful’ $400m White House ballroom

  • A 5-4 Supreme Court majority ruled that construction on a $400 million White House ballroom can proceed.
  • The decision reversed lower court orders that had temporarily halted aboveground work on the project.
  • Chief Justice John Roberts joined three liberal justices and dissented from the decision.
  • “Construction of the ballroom has proceeded apace for the better part of a year,” Roberts wrote. “That construction is likely unlawful.”
  • The court majority dismissed the lawsuit against the Trump administration on procedural grounds, finding that the National Trust for Historic Preservation lacked legal standing.
