Support for rejoining EU is reaches highest level since Brexit vote

  • Support for rejoining the European Union has reached a post-2016 high of 61 per cent compared to 39 per cent who wish to stay out, according to polling expert Professor Sir John Curtice.
  • The shift in public opinion is largely driven by demographic changes, as young people who were ineligible to vote in 2016 overwhelmingly favour rejoining.
  • Sir John warned that despite positive polling for rejoiners, a future referendum remains on a knife edge and depends heavily on how the debate is framed.
  • Voter concerns persist over potential EU membership conditions, including adopting the euro or joining the Schengen travel area.
  • Political leaders including Sir Keir Starmer and Andy Burnham were urged to actively defend and sell closer European ties rather than continuing a quiet strategy.
