Supermarket urged to 'chill with prices' as shopper dad walks out in disgust

Shoppers have accused a supermarket of 'taking advantage of the cost of living crisis' with 'disgusting' price hikes.

One dad says he was so shocked by the prices on his recent visit to Asda that he walked out and went to Aldi, where his shopping came to £15 less.

Sharing his dismay on social media, he said: "Absolutely disgusted with prices in Asda... So much so that we've walked out."

He described some of the prices as 'ridiculous, with Asda's 'own chips only 20p cheaper than branded ones, the dog food we normally buy had gone up 70p overnight, nearly all their beers and lagers have gone up 80p'.

Others replied saying they'd noticed prices had shot up 'between 10p and 50p' whenever they go, with a shopper declaring on another forum 'Asda need to chill with their prices. Wow!"

Mum Marie Tutuncu, from Stockport, has also noticed prices shooting up and shared a photo of a 190g tub of Bisto gravy on sale at Asda for £3 - more than any other supermarket.

"Since when was a small Bisto gravy £3," she said. "Asda is one of the worst supermarkets taking advantage of the cost of living crisis and marking up prices."

Replying to her post, one customer said: "I find Asda has gone really expensive. We are Aldi for dry foods and fruit then Costco for meat."

With another adding: "My hubby and I were talking about how expensive Asda are now."

While prices at all supermarkets have been on the rise, but there have been complaints over some hiking prices more than others.

We reported at the weekend how Morrisons has generally been under fire more than others.

In our weekly comparison of shopping basics like bread, butter and milk, it's been the most expensive place since March 2022, with just one exception, when Tesco took the unfortunate title earlier this month.

Our big shop at the place found some of the prices nonsensical, with the overall verdict being that it's only really worth it if you're taking advantage of its bigger packs sizes and promotions.

Despite complaints about both Morrisons and Asda, recent research from Which? shows that other supermarkets have had bigger price hikes over the last year - with budget retailers Lidl and Aldi both up by more than 20% compared with Asda's 15.4% and Morrisons' 12.9%.

An Asda spokesperson said: "We’re working hard to keep prices in check for customers and remain the lowest-priced major supermarket – a position recognised by Which? in their regular monthly basket comparison which has named Asda as the cheapest supermarket for a big shop every month for the last three years.”

A Morrisons spokesperson said: "We continue to work hard to keep prices down for our customers while maintaining high standards and availability in all our stores.

"We have recently introduced three significant price cutting initiatives to help our customers through this unprecedented period of inflation.

"We are also investing in our My Morrisons app offering shoppers exclusive deals and have introduced an online shopping hub called 'More Ways To Save', which helps customers identify savings across a number of categories."
