A supermarket previously accused of 'tacking the mick' out of customers with endless price hikes is now the second cheapest, trailing only Lidl. Manchester Evening News has been tracking the cost of the eight essentials at the six main supermarkets for a year now, and for most of that time Morrisons has taken the undesirable title of 'most expensive'.
After weeks of constant price hikes over the Summer of 2022, the supermarket was accused of 'laughing at customers', who claimed its prices were rising more than any of its competitors. The retailer was still charging the most in January for the items, which include a two-pint bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, a pack of chicken breasts, a pack of mince, tea bags, coffee, beans and butter.
But the tides have turned over the past week, as Morrisons overtook Aldi as the second cheapest supermarket behind Lidl. Despite mince rising from £2.39 to £2.49 in line with other supermarkets, the shift is mostly as a result of it reducing the costs of chicken breasts down from £2.59 to £2.25.
