Supermarket swipes cheapest crown from Lidl as budget retailer hikes cost of milk, bread and butter

As shoppers face an uphill battle against rising food costs, a supermarket that's been the cheapest for basics since June has been wiped off the top spot.

With the cost of living crisis hitting hard, we've been helping customers keep track of prices by comparing the cost of essentials like bread and milk at the six main supermarkets since March.

We've seen prices yo-yo during that time, some of which have shocked shoppers, like when Morrisons went from being the cheapest to the most expensive in a matter of weeks.

Yet while there have been many changes, there has been one constant since the summer - and that was Lidl keeping its top spot as the cheapest of them all.

But this week, with the budget retailer increasing three of the products we compare, it's Aldi that is now back in the lead.

It was only last week when Lidl ditched its cheapest £1.72 butter for a £1.99 block. But now the price of that has risen to £2.15.

Lidl has also put the price of its butter up to £2.15 (Manchester Family / MEN)

It's also put the cost of its cheapest loaf up from 36p to 39p and has hiked its two-pint bottle of milk from £1.25 to £1.30.

The rises mean to cost of the full Lidl basket - containing milk, a loaf of bread, coffee, teabags, butter, beans, chicken breasts and mince - has risen from £10.88 to £11.12 in a week.

Aldi on the other hand has remained the same, at £10.91, with Sainsbury's just 3pm more than Lidl at £11.15.

Tesco has also raised prices this week, putting its 100g tubs of Stockwell & Co instant coffee up to 93p and its beans up by 1p, while Asda has followed Lidl with the hike in milk to £1.30.

There have been no increases at Morrisons, but it remains the most expensive at £11.50.

The M.E.N has approached Lidl for a comment.
