
There might be no surer confirmation of Britain’s cost of living drama than the supermarket price war. Aldi has once again claimed the top spot as Britain’s cheapest supermarket, narrowly beating Lidl in the latest price comparison – as the two discount heavyweights continue to shake up the grocery market. Research by consumer group Which? found that a typical trolley of 79 everyday items came in at an average of £133.73 at Aldi last month, making it the most budget-friendly option for shoppers.
But money aside, for many Lidl is number one for ; the German discounter was named the country’s ‘Supermarket of the Year’ at the 2024 Retail Industry Awards – the self-proclaimed “Oscars of the retail world” – seeing off even the likes of M&S and Waitrose.
