Supermarket remains third cheapest behind Lidl and Aldi as retailers hike price of same budget essential

We're told food price rises are beginning to slow down, but the last week alone has seen the same item increased at three supermarkets.

Tesco, Aldi, Sainsbury's have added 10p onto the cost of their cheapest teabags, an increase of 7%.

And it comes just a week after the latter two, along with Lidl, hiked the price of bread too.

Despite the rises, our weekly comparison of the main six supermarkets shows that Lidl remains the cheapest of all, with a bill of £11.79 for the basket of eight items.

As well as bread and tea bags, our comparison has tracked the price of coffee, mince, chicken, beans, butter and a two-pint bottle of milk since last March.

For the second week running, Tesco (£12.31), is now third cheapest behind budget retailers Lidl and Aldi (£12.13) - and the only one to keep its cheapest loaf at the lower price of 39p.

Sainsbury's isn't far behind at £12.33, followed by Morrisons at £12.60 and Asda at £13.35.

Just this week we reported how a survey has suggested that soaring food prices may have peaked.

Food inflation fell to 15.4 per cent in the year to May, according to a survey by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and Nielsen.

It was down from 15.7% in April. But that is still an incredibly high figure, meaning that a person who spent around £20 in a food shop a year ago would now be paying a little over £23 for the same items.

This is an average so the exact number would depend on what they bought. Although May’s figure is a little lower than the food inflation seen in April, it is still the second fastest annual increase the BRC has ever measured, it said.

Aldi argues that its tea bags are a higher quality than Lidl's 'One Cup', but our comparison has simply used the cheapest 160-box available. Or, as in the case of Tesco and Asda, multiple smaller packs to make up that number.
