Supermarket giant Morrisons turns down checkout beeps and bans music after Queen's death

Supermarket giant Morrisons have turned down 'beep' sounds at their checkouts as a mark of respect to the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Music and tannoy announcements have also been banned inside the shops during the 10-day mourning period leading up to the funeral on September 19.

It follows reports on Monday (September 12) that all noises at the checkout tills had been completely tuned off — something which the company has since denied.

Speaking to The National, a spokesperson said: “Our checkout beeps are not off. They have just been turned down as our music and tannoy announcements have been switched off in stores.”

The measure is in-line with voluntary guidelines for businesses published by the government for the mourning period.

One entry on the Gov.uk website advises: “Make sure music in stores is appropriate and ensure that things are consistent with the national mood."

Morrisons will also join Sainsbury's, Aldi, Waitrose and Tesco in shutting their doors next week to mark the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

Tesco's large stores will be shut all day - with the Express stores remaining closed until 5pm.

Jason Tarry, Tesco UK CEO said: “We want to express our deepest condolences to the Royal Family, as well as our gratitude to Her Majesty The Queen for her unwavering service.

"On Monday 19th September, in order for our colleagues to pay their respects, our large stores will be closed all day and our Express stores will remain closed until 5pm.”

German supermarket Aldi will also be shutting on the day of the funeral - out of respect for Her Majesty.

Aldi said in a statement: "As a mark of respect, all Aldi stores across the UK will close on Monday, September 19, to allow our store colleagues to pay tribute to Her Majesty the Queen."

While September 19 has been declared a bank holiday, there is no legal requirement for employers to give staff the day off.
