Supermarket follows Lidl's lead with £2 budget food boxes

A supermarket has become the latest to offer cut-price boxes of fruit and vegetables.

Following the likes of Lidl, which sells boxes of wonky or imperfect fruit or veg for £1.50, Sainsbury's has now launched its own scheme.

The retailer has put stands inside many of its supermarkets, with shelves full of produce, retailing for £2 a box.

One shopper shared a photo of a display from her local store in a budget Facebook group and said: "I've seen today that Sainsbury's are doing these reduced boxes for £2, similar to Lidl now! Love getting these!"

Her post was inundated with comments from people, many of them praising the scheme.

"Got mine yesterday, such good value for money," said one.

"I picked one up on Friday, it’s fabulous," said another. "Lovely punnet of grapes , plenty of apples and Clementines, loads of carrots , an onion and courgette - just making a soup with the veg."

Boxes like these are becoming increasingly popular as shoppers look to keep their bills down amid the cost of living crisis.

Lidl launches its Too Good To Waste scheme back in 2019 and shoppers have previously shared hauls they've picked up from the supermarket.

We reported last year how mum-of-two Arja Vapola shared a photo of the box she picked up from her local Lidl, containing everything from mushrooms, potatoes and onions, to lettuce, grapes and oranges.

"If you’ve never seen these in your local Lidl ask member of staff what time they go out," she said. "I have three Lidls close by and one puts them out 8am, another ones closer to midday."
