Supermarket car park and bus station taped off after gas leak in town centre

A bus station and a supermarket car park were taped off for several hours following a 'gas leak' in a town centre.

Firefighters were called to reports of the incident at a business in Dale Street, Radcliffe, at about 12.30pm today (November 4). A cordon was put in place outside Limelight Amusements and the building was evacuated along with a number of nearby properties, including Radcliffe Market.

The car park to Lidl and the nearby bus station were taped off while emergency services dealt with the incident, according to eyewitnesses. Several fire engines and police cars were spotted at the scene throughout Friday afternoon.

Fire crews used specialist equipment to make the scene safe. The cordon has since been lifted, says Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS).

“Firefighters used specialist equipment to make the area safe before handing the scene over to gas engineers and Bury Council. The cordon has now been lifted.

“GMFRS crews were in attendance for about two and a half hours.”

In a post on Facebook, Radcliffe Market said: "Due to a gas leak in an adjacent building and having to evacuate the market, it has pushed our dine in traders behind their usual schedule but we are pleased to announce that we are open as usual tonight from 5pm, please bare with our food traders whilst they prep as they maybe delayed.

"They are hoping to be ready by 6pm at the latest."
