Supercomputer predicts Premier League table as West Ham fight Arsenal and Tottenham for top four

The Premier League title appears likely to be heading Manchester City's way this season, with Pep Guardiola's side currently 11 points clear at the top of the table.

However, the race for the Champions League places is far from over as West Ham lead the fight for fourth spot ahead of London rivals Arsenal and Spurs, with Manchester United a point further back, while even eighth-placed Wolves have an outside chance of crashing the party.

The Hammers currently sit above the chasing pack but Sunday's 3-2 defeat to Leeds United leaves them in a vulnerable position, considering they have played four more league matches than Spurs and two more than the Gunners, Man United and Wolves.

Now, a supercomputer from FiveThirtyEight has predicted how the final table will look, with Mikel Arteta's side on course to finish ahead of their rivals, according to the algorithm.

The table, which has City, Liverpool and Chelsea as the top three, in that order, forecasts Arsenal to finish fourth, Spurs fifth, West Ham sixth and Manchester United seventh.

Arsenal reportedly have a 41 per cent chance of qualifying for next season's Champions League, seven per cent more than Spurs and 30 and 31 per cent more than West Ham and the Red Devils, respectively.

West Ham missed out on the top four by just two points last season despite achieving a club Premier League record tally of 66 and making up those two points is David Moyes' target this season.

"The challenge was laid down from the start. Can we pick up another couple of points which might be close to the Champions League?" Moyes said.

"It might not be enough but if we get anywhere near the points total last season we'll have had a great season, so we'll keep challenging, keep pushing. But we know we've got a really tough second half of the season to come."

If the supercomputer is anything to go by, matching last season's 66 points would be enough for a top-four finish with Arsenal predicted to finish fourth with 65 points.

The Hammers currently have 37 and are predicted to collect 22 more over the final 16 games of the season to finish with 59.

Moyes would not be happy with this tally, even if back-to-back top-six finishes would be an admirable achievement and see the Hammers qualify for the Europa League next season.
