Ford wildcard Zak Best has pipped Supercars championship leader Shane van Gisbergen to secure pole position for Saturday's race at Tailem Bend.

The Tickford Racing driver, competing in a Supercars championship event for just the second time, clocked a one minute and 47.816 second fastest lap in qualifying at The Bend Motorsport Park in South Australia.

Series leader van Gisbergen fell just 0.02 seconds short of Best with his flying lap as the 20-year-old claimed the first pole position of his Supercars career.

"I wasn't expecting this," Best said.

"I don't really know what to say.

"I didn't think I'd be on pole this afternoon.

"Racing is a completely different thing. I've got to get off the line then try and stay out of trouble and it'll sort itself out."

Ominously for Best, he'll start with van Gisbergen's Red Bull Ampol Racing Commodore on the outside of the front row.

Best's Tickford Racing stablemate Cam Waters will start third alongside Bathurst 1000 champion Chaz Mostert.

Shell V-Power Racing pair Anton De Pasquale and Will Davison will be alongside each other on the third row of the grid.

Saturday's race starts at 4.15pm (1645 AEST).
