Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer shows first look at Peach and Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong

The second trailer for the up-and-coming Super Mario Bros. Movie has dropped and it gives us a deeper insight into Illumination Studios' interpretation of the Mushroom Kingdom and Nintendo's colourful cast of characters.

Based on the hit Nintendo video game franchise that has been a staple of the video game industry for 36 years the animated comedy adventure is set to be hit with kids and adults alike.

The first trailer caused a great deal of discussion mostly positive although many were disappointed at Chris Pratt 's version of the iconic plumber Mario’s voice.

The brand-new trailer was shown off during a Nintendo Direct presentation yesterday and was introduced by Mario creator and gaming legend, Shigeru Miyamoto.

Mario has been an iconic character within the gaming industry for over 35 years (Nintendo / Illumination)

Miyamoto teased that “It’s almost finished, and I’m not supposed to say anything else about it”

CEO and founder of Illumination studios, best known for the Minions, Despicable Me and Sing films then said a few words about Anya Taylor-Joy who is cast as Princess Peach and the trailer shows us for the first time.

“Anya brings another dimension to this character, whether she’s leading her Toads or going head to head against the Koopas.”

Anya then talked about how excited she is to play the character. Seth Rogan then appeared on screen to talk about his love for the work of Miyamoto, including naming his Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Zelda, after the other iconic Nintendo Princess.

The trailer opens with Mario walking out into a colosseum to face off with ape antagonist Donkey Kong, charging him and then being repeatedly slapped to the ground

The trailer also shows more of Jack Black as Bowser interrogating Luigi, which means we finally get to hear some of Charlie Day ’s performance as super Mario’s sibling.

We also get to see Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, offering a tougher and much more in-command take on the classic damsel in distress Peach fans may be used to.

Peach seems very different from the video game character (Nintendo / Illumination)

Taylor-Joy's Peach then offers a rousing speech while we see her collect a massive Halberd. We also get to see more of the self-aware comedy as the Toads point out how adorable they are, and they are.

The trailer then offers what looks like a training area that's very reminiscent of the classic 2D Marios Bros platforming levels, including Bill Blaster, Piranha plants, pipes and questions blocks. All of these will be familiar to Mario Brother fans new and old.

Mario is then hit, falls down launched by a bullet bill and land on a falling Donut Block, showing us that this version of Mario isn’t the platforming hero we know from the games, at least not straight away and the film will show his journey into becoming the capable hero we all know and love.

Fans have been overjoyed at the casting of Jack Black and Charlie Day (Nintendo / Illumination)

We also get to see some classic power-ups like the fire flower and Mario heroically soaring through the air in the Tanooki suit from Mario Bros 3, we even see a glimpse of several colourful Yoshi’s.

Peach even says “ There's a huge universe out there, with a lot of galaxies ” which is a callback to the 2007 Wii game Mario Galaxy.

We even get to see the well-known Mario Kart track Rainbow Road as Mario and friends rides their karts while Chris Pratt does a slightly better “ Ah ha ha ha ” Mario impression, classic Mario jump sound and Pratt following up with a “ Wah hoo ” for good measure.

Shigeru Miyamoto then returns to explain the updated design of Donkey Kong which was his debut video game over 40 years ago.

Fans will be hyped to see the new film and the Super Mario Bros. Movie is due for release on April 7, 2023.
