Flyweight champion Sunny Edwards has vowed to play nice with promoter Eddie Hearn in a bid to secure a unification clash with Julio Cesar Martinez.
Edwards is eyeing a title clash with Martinez if he successfully defends his title against Muhammad Waseem this weekend in Dubai. The Mexican is a familiar foe to Edwards having fought his brother Charlie in a fight that was declared a No Contest after an illegal body shot.
With an eye on the biggest and best fights, Edwards has explained how his feud with Hearn came about but is currently focused on his own ambitions. “Eddie is a great promoter and he knows what he is doing," Edwards told Mirror Fighting . "He knows that the fight between me and him can be pushed as the biggest flyweight fight in a long time. Depending on who you ask we are arguably the biggest two fighters in the division. No.1 vs No.3 why not?
"The personal story and back history which happened with my brother. No contest and Eddie Hearn walked to the ring with my brother and then even though he didn’t lose, pretty much walked out of the ring with Martinez as he had signed him. So there is a lot that goes into it, but as I said previously, play nice and I will get the fight. So here is me being nice, Eddie Hearn is the best promoter in the world.
“Anywhere in the world I would take any fight. Wherever you think the fight makes the most sense and makes the most money. Of course there could be a bigger profile but a boxing ring is a boxing ring. You tell me where you want me to go and off we go."
Edwards is considered one of the leading player's in the flyweight division, with his talent also placing him as one of the most talented fighters among the domestic ranks. He has been relentless in his pursuit of a unification clash with Martinez and is eyeing the biggest fights with the possibility of even a switch to 115lbs to face Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez.
The possibility of becoming undisputed champion could come further to the fore if he can face and defeat Martinez, but the British star is focused on fights that will consolidate his legacy. “It all depends really. I want legacy so whatever stands out," Edwards continued.
"Undisputed at one point in my career is something I am after but I feel I will be at world-level for some time to come. If I do get the fights that have been promised to me, if I can go on and get Martinez and beat him. The other champions are good fighters but don’t bring massive amounts other than world titles.
"If I am dangled a carrot like a mega-fight with Chocolatito or something like that, it would probably take priority. Any time I have tried to plan my career too much it hasn’t gone to plan, so I am just taking every conversation as it comes. I am here to see what fights my profile and platform can give me, and I don’t see why not?"
Sunny Edwards will be fighting as part of the Probellum Evolution event in Dubai (March 18-19), live exclusively on Eurosport’s linear channels, discovery+ and the Eurosport app. Check local listing for further details.
