Sunderland vs Burton Albion suspended after medical emergency in the stands

Sunderland's clash with Burton Albion was temporarily suspended due to a medical emergency in the stands.

The teams were just four minutes into the League One fixture when a fan took ill in the West Stand.

Players were ordered to return to their respective dressing rooms while stewards cleared a path to allow emergency services access to the fan.

Players were in the dressing room for more than 35 minutes while the fan received treatment before he was eventually removed from the stadium and taken to the hospital.

The game has since resumed after players took part in a second 10-minute warm-up.

Sunderland tweeted: "Fans are advised that play will resume following a ten-minute warm-up. We continue to send our best wishes to the supporter involved and thank you all for your cooperation and support."

Sunderland sacked their manager Lee Johnson at the end of January, with his assistant Jamie McAllister also departing.

Owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus said: "I would like to thank Lee for his commitment and endeavour over the past 14 months.

"We regret that we have had to take this decision, but felt immediate change was needed. We firmly believe that this is in the best interests of Sunderland AFC as we strive to earn promotion this season.

"Lee and Jamie will always be welcome at the Stadium of Light and they depart with our best wishes."

Mike Dodds is the current interim boss in charge of the Black Cats.
