Ross Stewart earned a spot in the League One team of the season at the EFL Awards ceremony last night. A prolific season for the Scotsman has propelled Sunderland into the play-off positions and given Alex Neil’s side a chance of winning promotion.
In his first full season at the Black Cats, Stewart has bagged 24 goals - putting him top of the goalscoring charts in League One. Sunderland took a punt on the 25-year-old for around £500,000 and the move has paid dividends as they are the joint-highest scorers in the division this season.
His exploits earned him a first senior call-up to the Scotland side in March but he was an unused substitute as the Tartan Army conceded a last-minute equaliser to Poland. Other inclusions in the team of the season are Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan, Ipswich Town’s Wes Burns and former Sunderland winger James McClean - now at Wigan Athletic. Ex-Newcastle United academy product Dan Barlaser also earned a place for his performances at Rotherham since leaving Tyneside.
This is the League One team of the season in full.
