Goals from Ross Stewart and Amad gave Sunderland a crucial victory against near-neighbours Middlesbrough at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats were dominant in the first half but could not make their chances count.
But in the second period they were given a helping hand when Boro defender Dael Fry conceded a penalty for a foul on Stewart, and was also sent off for a professional foul in the process. Stewart's penalty was saved by Zak Steffen, but the Scot was on hand to tap home the rebound.
And ten minutes from the end, Amad added the second goal just to make sure. Sunderland moved up to ninth place in the table and are now just a point behind sixth-placed Boro and fifth-placed Norwich City.
