Sunderland have confirmed the sad news that the supporter who received emergency medical treatment in last week’s 1-1 draw with Burton Albion has unfortunately passed away. Lifelong supporter Michael Waggott was transferred to Sunderland Royal Hospital where he died on Thursday 24 February.
Play at the Stadium of Light was suspended for 52 minutes against the Brewers on Tuesday where Waggott received treatment from emergency services. The club have placed on record their gratitude for the response shown by everyone to the incident.
Tributes have already been coming in after the passing of Waggott, with Newcastle United placing all rivalries to one side in this difficult time and tweeting their condolences. They wrote on their official Twitter: “Very sad news. The thoughts of everyone at #NUFC are with Michael’s family and friends at this time. Rest in peace, Michael.”
