Sunderland are on course to surpass last year's record number of season ticket sales as the club looks to make another bid for promotion to the Premier League. The Black Cats sold more than 32,000 season tickets for their return to the Championship 12 months ago - the highest number since the club's move to the Stadium of Light in 1997.
And following on from the success of the 2022-23 campaign in which Tony Mowbray's side finished sixth in the second tier to reach the play-offs semi-finals, where they lost to eventual winners Luton Town, the club today revealed that it has already sold in excess of 29,000 season tickets for next season. Last season, Sunderland recorded average attendances at home of more than 38,500 - almost 10,000 more than the next highest Championship club, which was Sheffield United with 28,700.
Sunderland's average gate also ranked higher than half the clubs in the Premier League. Season tickets went on sale in March and remained on sale until April at early-bird prices, with more than 28,000 sold when that window closed.
