Joe Gelhardt has waited a long time for a first-team opening but it seems one has finally come his way. The Leeds United loanee is in line for a Sunderland debut this weekend as Tony Mowbray’s side travel to south London to take on Millwall in the Championship.
It’s a huge game for both sides at The Den and the winner could move into the play-off places, depending on results elsewhere in the second tier, of course. Gelhardt is expected to be the man leading the line for the Black Cats in the capital on Saturday afternoon and it’s fair to say he’ll be desperate to take the opportunity with both hands.
The youngster’s struggles for game time at Elland Road over the opening half of the Premier League season have been well documented. Jesse Marsch could regularly be seen turning in the 20-year-old’s direction, but his stints on the field were too short, often appearing just a few minutes before injury time was signalled.
