'Sunderland deserve to go to Wembley' - Kevin Phillips reacts to League One play-off win

Kevin Phillips believes Sunderland deserved to snatch a dramatic play-off victory against Sheffield Wednesday. With extra time looming, Patrick Roberts bagged on 93 minutes to level the game but most importantly put the Black Cats ahead on aggregate.

Alex Neil’s men held on for the remaining seven minutes of injury time to book their place in the League One play-off final. Wycombe Wanderers await at Wembley - a stadium Sunderland will play at for the fourth time in three years.

Club legend Phillips thinks his former side were the better side throughout the two legs and are worthy finalists. “They’ve shown, for me, everything you need to get to a final,” he told Sky Sports post-match.

“They’ve had to defend for their lives at times, putting bodies on the line. They’ve played some good football at times. “You have to say, in the two ties, the football hasn’t been brilliant. There’s been a lot of endeavour, a lot of spirit.

“Over the two legs that Sunderland deserve to go to Wembley with the chances they created at the Stadium of Light and the composure they showed in the second half to move the ball around.

“I was disappointed with Sheffield Wednesday, I thought they didn't come out. It was all back to front, a bit like the first half at the Stadium of Light.”
