Sunderland could potentially lose one of their key men in January as Manchester United reportedly consider whether to recall some of their loanees - with wideman Amad one possible candidate. Our sister newspaper the Manchester Evening News says the Red Devils are 'open to' recalling loan players in January, with 'senior sources' at Old Trafford suggesting that changes to the Manchester United squad in the New Year might mean that they need to look at their options.
Amad is on loan with the Black Cats for the season but the deal - as is usual with season-long loans - contains a clause that allows his parent club to cut short the arrangement in January. The 20-year-old took time to find his feet at Sunderland but has recently hit form and started the last five games, scoring three goals in the process.
With Cristiano Ronaldo having been released by Manchester United, it has left the club with one fewer attacking player than planned and while January offers an opportunity to enter the transfer market and bring in a replacement, another option would be to recall Amad. It would be a tough call for Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag to make, however, as he would have to weigh up the amount of gametime he could offer Amad against the value of allowing him to stay at Sunderland and continue to play regular first-team football in the Championship.

Amad is not the only Manchester United player currently on loan at a Championship club, with right-back Ethan Laird playing at QPR while midfielder Hannibal Mejbri is at Birmingham City. Both Laird and Mejbri's loan deals are also understood to contain January recall clauses.
