The Sunday Times’s expert judges behind the guide assess a wide range of factors, from schools, transport and broadband to culture, green spaces and the health of the high street.
They look to celebrate improving towns, villages or city centres; attractive, well-designed homes, and locations bursting with community spirit – which the pandemic has shown to be the most vital quality of all.
And in the Scotland category, East Lothian's North Berwick has been named as one of the best places to live - with the Isle of Bute, Argyll, named the best place to live in Scotland.
Judges said of the stunning coastal town: "The jewel of the East Lothian coast is too good to leave out of the list, thanks to its unbeatable combination of schools, independent shops, laid-back beach life and trains to the capital."
